About GIRR

What Is GIRR?

Galiano Islands Recycling Resources Society (GIRR) was incorporated in July 1992 to manage and recycle Galiano Island’s wastes through reuse, reduction and recovery of recyclable materials. Assisted by part-time and volunteer staff members,GIRR pursues its goals by operating a recycling centre,a redirectory (Free Store),cooperating with local organizations and organizing public education programs.

What Makes GIRR Activities So Important?

GIRR diverts over 100 TONNES of waste from the Hartland Landfill on the Saanich Peninsula each year. This waste is now being reused for road construction, plastics, manufacturing, tin cans, drink bottles/cans/containers,paper,newspaper and cardboard boxes. Because of GIRR and it’s dedicated volunteers and users, extraction of natural resources such as forests, metals and fossil fuels can be reduced.
